Congratulations !

This is a wonderful portrait that is, as you note, as much a capture of the pastime, tradition, and art of making maple syrup as it is of the person featured. I know nothing about this work, but the evident joy of the subject makes me feel I was there watching, feeling the nip of the cold early spring air and waiting to taste the syrup - though that would be a long wait, I suppose :) Congratulations on the sale.

Thanks Irina! I hope indeed there was a sale. I haven't seen it yet but it doesn't matter. It was a beautiful winter day at the lake :>)

Artist's Description

I do not often do portraits. Peoples own impression of what they think they look like, often gets in the way of creating something they actually like. There is only room for one person behind the brush. I think that my friend Gordon was very pleased. A subtle change in a shade or a shape can change Gordon into Elvis and vice versa... whoever...

This is a classic Canadian past-time of harvesting sugar maple sap and boiling it down into a host of truly delicious and distinctly Canadian products. There are few activities that are more soothing to the mind and that are also hard work at the same time. Watching the warm vapours rise off the evapouration tray on a spring day is rejuveniating. I wanted to capture the joy of life and the rebirth of spring after a cold and snowy winter.

About Phil Chadwick

Phil Chadwick

I paint outside - nothing between my eyes and the inspiration. That special connectivity gets into the pigments and you quickly realize that we are all stewards of the land, privileged to appreciate its beauty during our lifetime but responsible for leaving the environment better off for the future and all inhabitants... Phil was born and raised along the St. Lawrence of Ontario, Canada and studied at Queens University as a nuclear physicist. A meteorologist for Environment Canada for 35 years, Phil specializes in severe weather and training. Remote sensing is his forte - you might want to see a tornado before you die... but not just before you die! He has farmed, raised bees, written books and articles, lectured and instructed...
