Artist's Description
The Great Grey Owl is one of the world's largest owls. It is often referred to as the Great Grey Ghost or Phantom of the North as it is one of the most reclusive owls of North America. Add to that its secretive habits and you have a bird that is rarely seen and little known. The call of the adult Great Grey Owl is a series of soft, rhythmic whoos. The whoo-ooo-ooo-ooo-ooo, can last for up to eight seconds. It can be heard during mating season but the rest of the year the adults are usually silent. The young are vocal and will shriek, hiss and chitter.
