A wonderful reminder of a place I love, Phil! LF

Phil Chadwick replied:

Thank you Steve. Images can bring back a flood of memories. I think looking at art can be very therapeutic :>))

Artist's Description

I was paddling the north shore of George Lake in Killarney Provincial Park in late July 2007. I was cruising as close to the shore as possible and having fun doing it. It amazes me how these pines manage to eke out a living from a crack in the white quartzite rock of Killarney.

The white quartzite that makes up 75% of Killarney are the remnants of one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world. Less than two billion years ago, the La Cloche Range towered as high as the Rockies. The grinding of four successive ice ages transformed the range into a cluster of white-capped islands and low peaks, of which Silver Peak is the highest.

The pine isn't two billion years old but it is very old and much older than one might guess. I wish it well!

About Phil Chadwick

Phil Chadwick

I paint outside - nothing between my eyes and the inspiration. That special connectivity gets into the pigments and you quickly realize that we are all stewards of the land, privileged to appreciate its beauty during our lifetime but responsible for leaving the environment better off for the future and all inhabitants... Phil was born and raised along the St. Lawrence of Ontario, Canada and studied at Queens University as a nuclear physicist. A meteorologist for Environment Canada for 35 years, Phil specializes in severe weather and training. Remote sensing is his forte - you might want to see a tornado before you die... but not just before you die! He has farmed, raised bees, written books and articles, lectured and instructed...
