This was the second day of the plein air paint out. The weather was ideal. The skies were generally cloudy and it was not too warm and not too humid - Goldilocks Plein Air Weather.
I arrived shortly after 8 am and had this painting well under way as people arrived.This is a demo looking northeastward across the exit of the Delta MIll. The Old Stone Mill at Delta was built in 1810 by William Jones and is one of the earliest surviving, fully automatic, grist mills of Upper Canada. In 1817 the mill was described as "unquestionably the best building of the kind in Upper Canada".
In 1963 the last owner of the Mill, Hastings Steele, deeded the Old Stone Mill to a group of four people in trust, for the sum of one dollar. Mr. Steele's prime concern was that the Mill should be preserved and would in time become a museum of milling technology. I paint outside - nothing between my eyes and the inspiration. That special connectivity gets into the pigments and you quickly realize that we are all stewards of the land, privileged to appreciate its beauty during our lifetime but responsible for leaving the environment better off for the future and all inhabitants... Phil was born and raised along the St. Lawrence of Ontario, Canada and studied at Queens University as a nuclear physicist. A meteorologist for Environment Canada for 35 years, Phil specializes in severe weather and training. Remote sensing is his forte - you might want to see a tornado before you die... but not just before you die! He has farmed, raised bees, written books and articles, lectured and instructed...
