We arrived in Nova Scotia 1977 as my first posting with the Atmospheric Environment Service was Canadian Forces Base Shearwater, CYAW. Nova Scotia was a great place to learn about the weather and meteorology. Fog was the great humbler that always arrived just when you thought you might be starting to learn something. We frequently travelled Route 333 with visitors and spent the day exploring the coves and craft shops. The day trip also took us to many painting places along the South Shore. We made a great many new friends along Route 333.
Hackett's Cove is one of the many small ports along the South Shore's Route 333. Hackett's Cove is situated southwest of Glen Margaret and south of Woodens River. A Google search describes it as "Hackett's Cove is a rural community of the Halifax Regional Municipality in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia on the Chebucto Peninsula. I paint outside - nothing between my eyes and the inspiration. That special connectivity gets into the pigments and you quickly realize that we are all stewards of the land, privileged to appreciate its beauty during our lifetime but responsible for leaving the environment better off for the future and all inhabitants... Phil was born and raised along the St. Lawrence of Ontario, Canada and studied at Queens University as a nuclear physicist. A meteorologist for Environment Canada for 35 years, Phil specializes in severe weather and training. Remote sensing is his forte - you might want to see a tornado before you die... but not just before you die! He has farmed, raised bees, written books and articles, lectured and instructed...

Yes, Ken is right on...fantastic and so painterly...great scene and wonderful backstory...the palette is exquisite and the brushwork and composition just perfect...LOVE IT! Fresh and gorgeous!

The strength of a Studio piece is that the unlimited time allows one the luxury of pondering and planning each stroke of colour... which is also the greatest weakness. Plein air forces me to just charge ahead and let "The Force" guide your hand and the brush. I like them both but must admit to preferring the Studio when the wind chill is minus 20 or the biting bugs are dominant. Thank you so very much Sunny.
