I asked the finest meteorological minds for their opinions. There were divergent opinions and possibly some complicating factors on the simpler, historical conceptual models. Certainly the convective atmosphere moves in bubbles rather that continuous streams but I feel the old models still have merit. There are certainly exceptions to every rule but it is easiest to start with the generalizations and then look for the more rare events. This was indeed a supercell and the atmospheric dynamics supported severe convection as evidenced by the multitude of messages.
The core of the updraft looked like to would pass just to the northof the studio. The rear flank downdraft was giving some brightening on the western horizon. The underside of the supercell thunderstorm may have looked chaotic in the complex, interrelated motions but it wa...

Phil was born and raised along the St. Lawrence of Ontario, Canada and studied at Queens University as a nuclear physicist. A meteorologist for Environment Canada for 35 years, Phil specializes in severe weather and training. Remote sensing is his forte - you might want to see a tornado before you die... but not just before you die! He has farmed, raised bees, written books and articles, lectured and instructed...
