This is pure meteorology and a very unusual subject matter - except for me. Those whitish swirls are excellent examples of Arctic Sea Smoke during a frigid outbreak of Arctic air over the still “warm” waters of the St Lawrence River. The swirls and vortices in the rising updrafts were really exploding! The northerly flow of icy air was swirling around the bulk of The Executive creating circular convergence lines in the wake of the building - a vorticity chain which I have written a lot about. The sun was dazzling to the southeast and blinded me whenever I looked that way to match colours. The Morrisburg water tower is the landmark to anchor the scene. At the peak of the Arctic Sea Smoke the far shore of the St Lawrence was almost totally obscured. The St Lawrence was really smoking!
I paint outside - nothing between my eyes and the inspiration. That special connectivity gets into the pigments and you quickly realize that we are all stewards of the land, privileged to appreciate its beauty during our lifetime but responsible for leaving the environment better off for the future and all inhabitants... Phil was born and raised along the St. Lawrence of Ontario, Canada and studied at Queens University as a nuclear physicist. A meteorologist for Environment Canada for 35 years, Phil specializes in severe weather and training. Remote sensing is his forte - you might want to see a tornado before you die... but not just before you die! He has farmed, raised bees, written books and articles, lectured and instructed...
