Artist's Description

I was at Darlingside on the north shore of the mighty St Lawrence River. I painted #1833 "Darlingside" en plein air. It was a very windy day. The southwesterlies were funneling down the St Lawrence with gusts to 30 knots and maybe more. The sun felt good on our backs. The wind made it challenging to hold my palette and the canvas was more like a sail. The brush work was even a challenge. I used my pinky finger as a small, portable mahl stick.

While painting I took a brief break and walked out to the end of the pier to catch a few impressions of the sunset. The sky was on fire at 16:25 pm on November 10th, 2016! That line in the sky was certainly a deformation zone with a retreating system. The moisture was packed characteristically very economically in the weak and gentle ascent associated with the backside of a retreating low.
