On many other occasions I would have called these cloud as streets of turbulent stratocumulus. The clouds are indeed aligned with the wind. However the May sun was strong enough to given them rather flat convective bottoms. Daytime heating of parcels from the surface was the strong factor in the formation of these clouds. Some of the cumulus were even producing tenuous, exploratory wisps of virga. The midday sun was lighting these clouds from the top down so that the bases were rather dark as well. The lighting that produces a scene can be amazingly complicated. It is no problem though if you simply paint what you see.
I painted these same cloud streets an hour earlier en plein air in #1933 "Morning Cloud Story". At 10 am those clouds were mainly front lit and the May sun felt good on my back. The sounds of spring were still in the air. There were a few black flies in the air as well but they were not biting. I was experimenting with the handling of the oils and the treatment...
I paint outside - nothing between my eyes and the inspiration. That special connectivity gets into the pigments and you quickly realize that we are all stewards of the land, privileged to appreciate its beauty during our lifetime but responsible for leaving the environment better off for the future and all inhabitants...
