Description
The outside temperature was plus 14 Celsius and the mild weather was calling to me. I set up my easel at the edge of the St Lawrence River in the Old Protestant Cemetery just west of Brockville. I had to tie my easel down as the blustery southwest winds were trying to blow it over. Leaves were blowing and the ducks and geese were wheeling into the shelter of the islands to rest and feed. I was glad to be using my small palette which I made when I was 14 or so. The wind even blew it around and made it difficult to mix the paint.
This is essentially a turbulent stratocumulus skyscape ahead of the impending cold front. I laid the sky in quickly as the clouds were changing equally quickly. Refugee Island wasn’t moving so that was the last thing to put onto the canvas. I finished the sketch with 8 minutes to spare before the cold front swept through with even more wind and showers. The first cold front would only drop the temperatures by 8 degrees. The second cold front scheduled for Thursday night would finish the job and drop the temperatures to below zero.
The buffeting by the wind caused the waterfowl and me to seek some shelter like a refugee from the persecution of the elements. This explains the title along with the fact that the name of the island is “Refugee Island”. I was standing in about the same spot that my parents must have stood as they watched Reg Downie and I paddle into similar winds around 1969 as we were on our way to camp on the islands.
On the way home, I stopped by the grave site of Mario, Lily and Paola Airomi and left a brush stuck into the soil by the stone marker.
Every painting is another memory.

Furious looking clouds Phil add atmosphere and exemplify the changing weather! The pops of color on the distant shore add depth! Wonderful description!
