Artist's Description
I left the condo before 9 am and noticed a black Canadian Steamship Line laker on its way upriver just approaching the Three Sisters. I arrived at Toltons and by the time I was down at the deck of the boathouse, the same laker was just approaching Crossover Island. I hurriedly sketched in the laker and the details just in time.
The wind was brisk out of the northeast and was pushing the laker along at a good clip. The white surf was as prominent on the stern as it was on the bow wave. The entire scene was backlit by the morning sun. The clouds look very different with the light coming from behind the water droplets. Mie scattering can be used to explain the colours. The cirriform cloud on the southeast horizon are indicative of the large low pressure area tracking over New England and which is responsible for the winds in the first place. This cloud was moving to the east with the low while the cumulus and cumulus fractus were moving to the southwest with the winds.
