Artist's Description
I had some time and wanted to paint. Strong, chilly and blustery southwesterly winds were funneling down the St Lawrence River creating quite a lot of wave action. The skies were generally overcast with towering cumulus and turbulent stratocumulus but occasionally a shaft of light broke through and lit up the river whenever a more vigourous towering cumulus passed by. In this image a vigourous towering cumulus was just exiting stage left while another was entering stage right. The sky was full of melting snow flakes. The clouds were all composed of ice crystals. There are lots of different shades of gray in snow clouds! These facts explain the title.
The island in the distance on the American side of the St Lawrence is called "Old Man Island".
I am stretching the definition to call this a plein air piece as I was in the comfort of the condo when I painted the clouds from real life. It was certainly done from the actual scene but I wasn't standing outside.
About Phil Chadwick
I paint outside - nothing between my eyes and the inspiration. That special connectivity gets into the pigments and you quickly realize that we are all stewards of the land, privileged to appreciate its beauty during our lifetime but responsible for leaving the environment better off for the future and all inhabitants... Phil was born and raised along the St. Lawrence of Ontario, Canada and studied at Queens University as a nuclear physicist. A meteorologist for Environment Canada for 35 years, Phil specializes in severe weather and training. Remote sensing is his forte - you might want to see a tornado before you die... but not just before you die! He has farmed, raised bees, written books and articles, lectured and instructed...
