This is number twenty-six in the Canoe Lake Paddle as numbered along the path of the paddle. This shore is the western edge of Canoe Lake just north of the entrance to Whiskey Jack Bay. I was playing with the reflections and trying different techniques to capture the light of the sky emerging through the forest. It is a trick to keep your colours clean and have just the right about of tinted panel peeking through. The yellow could be from the maples but it could also be from the birches that were located along the shoreline. I can't be certain but this is one of my favourites from the paddle.
The feel of the painting is a strong function of the smooth but textured surface, the bold strokes and the aging oils. I was still working with the original palette of paint from several weeks before. I was just adding new pigments as I needed them. Waste not, want not...
I used a lot of paint on this small and very slippery surface. I simply laid the oils in and tried to leave...
I paint outside - nothing between my eyes and the inspiration. That special connectivity gets into the pigments and you quickly realize that we are all stewards of the land, privileged to appreciate its beauty during our lifetime but responsible for leaving the environment better off for the future and all inhabitants... Phil was born and raised along the St. Lawrence of Ontario, Canada and studied at Queens University as a nuclear physicist. A meteorologist for Environment Canada for 35 years, Phil specializes in severe weather and training. Remote sensing is his forte - you might want to see a tornado before you die... but not just before you die! He has farmed, raised bees, written books and articles, lectured and instructed...
