Artist's Description

This is number thirty-nine of forty-six in the Canoe Lake Paddle as numbered along the path of the paddle. I believe this is the southern tip of Chubby's Island. The lone dead spruce caught my eye along with the colourful autumn maples. Some scenes attract me more than others and this is one of my favourites. The reflections from the shore were generally darker in the tea stained waters of Canoe Lake.

The cloud bases were getting darker but there was no virga yet at least in the western sky. I still had time to dawdle my way back to the southern end of Canoe Lake - plus I never minded the rain anyway.

The feel of the painting is a strong function of the smooth but textured surface, the bold strokes and the aging oils. I was still working with the original palette of paint from several weeks before. Some of the oils were getting gooey. I was just adding new pigments as I needed them. Waste not, want not... I used a lot of paint on this small and very slippery surface...

About Phil Chadwick

Phil Chadwick

I paint outside - nothing between my eyes and the inspiration. That special connectivity gets into the pigments and you quickly realize that we are all stewards of the land, privileged to appreciate its beauty during our lifetime but responsible for leaving the environment better off for the future and all inhabitants... Phil was born and raised along the St. Lawrence of Ontario, Canada and studied at Queens University as a nuclear physicist. A meteorologist for Environment Canada for 35 years, Phil specializes in severe weather and training. Remote sensing is his forte - you might want to see a tornado before you die... but not just before you die! He has farmed, raised bees, written books and articles, lectured and instructed...
