Artist's Description

It was a chilly and snowy day at Singleton Lake. The damp breeze blew right into my bones so I painted inside and looked out the window while using the studio easel. At times the snow let up a bit and that was the moment I captured in the pigments. There is not much point to painting a white-out. I used a lot of paint and rolled it on to the canvas from an old and very tired brush. I have painted the silhouette of these white pines many times before but every day and every painting is different. The pair of red cedars in the middle of the open field have been browsed upward by the white tail deer that we see most every day. I also saw the male bobcat today as it crossed the Singleton ice. Some call this approach "plein air" and on some days, like this, I tend to almost agree.

About Phil Chadwick

Phil Chadwick

I paint outside - nothing between my eyes and the inspiration. That special connectivity gets into the pigments and you quickly realize that we are all stewards of the land, privileged to appreciate its beauty during our lifetime but responsible for leaving the environment better off for the future and all inhabitants... Phil was born and raised along the St. Lawrence of Ontario, Canada and studied at Queens University as a nuclear physicist. A meteorologist for Environment Canada for 35 years, Phil specializes in severe weather and training. Remote sensing is his forte - you might want to see a tornado before you die... but not just before you die! He has farmed, raised bees, written books and articles, lectured and instructed...
