I was Artist in Residence and Tom Thomson for the day at the McMichael Art Gallery. The day happened to be Sunday September 30th, 2007 . This was to commemorate the 1927 meeting between Emily Carr and the Group of Seven. Of course, Tom Thomson had died a decade previously but that didn’t bother Emily much.
I set up right in front of the gallery. I switched my view to the north in the early afternoon hours of my portrayal of Tom Thomson. This is the large spruce tree immediately to the northwest of the main entry into the Algonquin Gallery. It is a very distinctive tree and I wanted to capture it as the individual that it is.
The sky looking toward the northeast told an interesting story. The deformation zones heralding the advance of a warm conveyor belt had already pushed to the northeast of McMichael. The air was gently rising as indicated by the egg-carton altocumulus but the conveyor belt itself was not overly moist. The sun was still breaking through the clouds...
I paint outside - nothing between my eyes and the inspiration. That special connectivity gets into the pigments and you quickly realize that we are all stewards of the land, privileged to appreciate its beauty during our lifetime but responsible for leaving the environment better off for the future and all inhabitants... Phil was born and raised along the St. Lawrence of Ontario, Canada and studied at Queens University as a nuclear physicist. A meteorologist for Environment Canada for 35 years, Phil specializes in severe weather and training. Remote sensing is his forte - you might want to see a tornado before you die... but not just before you die! He has farmed, raised bees, written books and articles, lectured and instructed...
