I had a perfect chance to paint with nothing else planned. The turbulent stratocumulus was coming with the brisk winds from the west-northwest. It was a chilly 6 Celsius but every now and again the sun would break out between the streets of stratocumulus and it became absolutely beautiful with the sun on my back. I succeeded at capturing the scene before it got too dark.
I was standing in what would later be the office of our final home and looking northeast along the marble ridge. The large basswood tree in the very centre was dead and would have to be removed. Some of the red cedars would be cut down as well but everything else is still standing. For every tree I cut down, I have planted maybe a thousand replacements - maybe more...
I paint outside - nothing between my eyes and the inspiration. That special connectivity gets into the pigments and you quickly realize that we are all stewards of the land, privileged to appreciate its beauty during our lifetime but responsible for leaving the environment better off for the future and all inhabitants... Phil was born and raised along the St. Lawrence of Ontario, Canada and studied at Queens University as a nuclear physicist. A meteorologist for Environment Canada for 35 years, Phil specializes in severe weather and training. Remote sensing is his forte - you might want to see a tornado before you die... but not just before you die! He has farmed, raised bees, written books and articles, lectured and instructed...
