It's quite amazing because it seems like a real plein air painting with the light and color and all. You have a phenomenal atmosphere and color memory!

Phil Chadwick replied:

Thank you Sunny :>) Your comments keep me going.

Oh, the colors! Yay! Love the sky and the figure and the patterns...so cool! Absolutely beautiful and energizing, Phil! l/f

Phil Chadwick replied:

Thank you Sunny. The original photo was B/W but I referred to some of my plein air paintings to create the colours. It was fun!

Phil Chadwick replied:

Plus I used a ton of paint :>)) Life does not get any better Sunny.

Artist's Description

This painting is based on an old photo of the ice harvesting operations at Port Coldwell. The photo I consulted was from Kathleen Allen of Allen's Store in Port Caldwell. Those and other pictures of Port Coldwell are now in the collection of her daughter Ann Barker. I have been unsuccessful so far at making contact with Ann. In later in the years it was sold to Charles Lemkcke which they used as their cottage. The Blanchard family had Mary Lees do a painting of it for their Dad when he retired from C.P.R. This information was courtesy of Nancy Dick Blanchard. Thank you.

A meteorologist for Environment Canada for 35 years, Phil specializes in severe weather and training. Remote sensing is his forte - you might want to see a tornado before you die... but not just before you die! He has farmed, raised bees, written books and articles, lectured and instructed...
