Artist's Description

There was a weakening upper low spinning over eastern Ontario. The tilt of this upper low was higher toward western New York State slanting to lower levels over Singleton Lake. Such a tilted vortex in the atmosphere was apt to be weakening. The older cloud was no longer being supported by dynamic lift and there was not going to be any precipitation from this system. The colours of the cloud as backlit by the setting sun were fantastic and inspired me to paint. The cloud particles would have be larger with age. Sometimes though it is more important to capture the moment than to ponder the complex physics of the ever changing optics of the sky.

This is a very rough panel and it takes a lot of paint - always fun.

About Phil Chadwick

Phil Chadwick

I paint outside - nothing between my eyes and the inspiration. That special connectivity gets into the pigments and you quickly realize that we are all stewards of the land, privileged to appreciate its beauty during our lifetime but responsible for leaving the environment better off for the future and all inhabitants... Phil was born and raised along the St. Lawrence of Ontario, Canada and studied at Queens University as a nuclear physicist. A meteorologist for Environment Canada for 35 years, Phil specializes in severe weather and training. Remote sensing is his forte - you might want to see a tornado before you die... but not just before you die! He has farmed, raised bees, written books and articles, lectured and instructed...
