Artist's Description

This is number forty of forty-six in the Canoe Lake Paddle as numbered along the path of the paddle.

I had paddles south out of Sims Creek from the foot bridge in front of Camp Ahmek. This is a view of Chubby's Island that lies just offshore to the west of Camp Ahmek. The red roofs of the structures were striking and caught my eye. I think that I was looking northward. The location would have ben idyllic any time of the year. There was 25 metre deep water to the south surrounded by shoals. The fishing would have been very good.

The deformation zone bands of ever increasingly dark cloud stretched on the northern horizon. Some shafts of virga were also starting to waft earthward. The rain was getting closer.

The feel of the painting is a strong function of the smooth but textured surface, the bold strokes and the aging oils. I was still working with the original palette of paint from several weeks before. Some of the oils were getting gooey. I was just addin...
