I was up and very busy painting on the last morning of the CPAWS Dumoine River Art Camp - it was the August Holiday Monday. I was down to my last few panels from my canoe pack. This is a very rough piece of sealed masonite with a grey, matte tint. I was painting on the coarse and textured side so there was little chance of including too much detail in the final painting. It was perfect for the plein air occasion.
This is the view turned west-southwestward across Robinson Lake and the neighbouring small point of land. There were several black spruce on this point. When grown on high and dry ground, black spruce trees are taller and thicker. When it grows in wetlands, the tree is much smaller like those that I observed. Trees grown in wetlands can reach 200 years of age and grow very slowly. Black spruce cones are egg shaped, 2 to 3 centimetres long, and are dark brown.
