Beautiful serenity and contrasts in this very evocative work Phil! FL

Phil Chadwick replied:

If the thunderstorm is more than 20 km away ... more or less, the thunder doesn't make it to the surface.

Artist's Description

Singleton Lake was in a hot, humid and unstable air mass. Convection was being maintained overnight by short wave troughs embedded in the upper flow. This particular tower erupted above the cloud deck just after dawn and sparkled in the sunrise light for just a few minutes. A heavy shower crossed Singleton Lake a couple of hours later. I think there was some thunder as well.

The stable layer was quite pronounced at the top of the solid mass of cloud. The strands of altocumulus preceding the convection were displayed in gravity waves at the inversion. The water vapour image shows the north to south deformation and the leading edge of the convection through Napanee. The convective tops were even starting to show on the watervapour image.

About Phil Chadwick

Phil Chadwick

I paint outside - nothing between my eyes and the inspiration. That special connectivity gets into the pigments and you quickly realize that we are all stewards of the land, privileged to appreciate its beauty during our lifetime but responsible for leaving the environment better off for the future and all inhabitants... Phil was born and raised along the St. Lawrence of Ontario, Canada and studied at Queens University as a nuclear physicist. A meteorologist for Environment Canada for 35 years, Phil specializes in severe weather and training. Remote sensing is his forte - you might want to see a tornado before you die... but not just before you die! He has farmed, raised bees, written books and articles, lectured and instructed...
