I went painting after finishing my chores. I was warm in my snowmobile suit - but uncomfortably snug - maybe it was the Christmas food. I also took the opportunity to clean all of the bird houses in the back half of Watershed Farm. It was a busy day for me.
This is the view looking east from the knoll just east of the pond that drains through our property eventually to the Humber River. It was bright and sunny when I started but an approaching warm front brought in overcast altostratus and cirrostratus as well as an increasing southeasterly breeze. There was already a wind warning out for this storm. I was intrigued by the snow shadows and the intermixed browns of the field.
As I painted, a flock of a dozen or more slate gray juncos flew overhead almost at the top of my easel. Moments later a male goshawk cruised the back hill and into the pines south of the farm. The little birds must be very aware of their environment or become an entree in the food chain.
