Description
The fiery sunset cirrostratus foretold of the coming winter storm. The ice crystals and air molecules within the long atmospheric path of the direct beam from the sun, scatter out the blue portion of the spectrum - Rayleigh scattering. A Colorado low would bring twenty centimetres of snow, lots of wind and blowing and drifting snow. The ice reflected the sunset colours significantly different than the open water. A male merganser was still fishing the open water and I suspect it had been wounded during the hunting season. It was doing well enough with the open water and might still avoid entering the food chain.
