Description
I thought that I had better do something from what has become my home town. The lily pads in the front left are the proof required to show which way it up ... and down. It is a reflected mirror image but the colours are darker and the shapes distorted in the water.
This is the oldest bridge in Ontario built in 1856-57. It was designed by John Roddick and erected by contractors Miles Fulford and Simon Ransom. Local field stone was used and laid in random courses. I had to refind myself each time I tried to paint another stone in the wall. It was easy to get lost in the rubble. I did attempt to match up the actual stones and their reflection - not easy. The water is actually green in the shadows and the darker tunnel on the right leads northward into Lower Beverley Lake. I painted the arches the way I saw them and confirmed that two if not all three of them were "slightly oblique" - neither parallel nor at a right angle to a specified or implied line; slanting.
The bridge was strengthened in 1986. My good neighbour was one of the engineers who got that project done.
