This is the sky 20 minutes prior to #1828 "Just Another November Sunset". The colours of the clouds and the sky were changing by the minute. Bands of high altostratus were evident along with the lower level back lit turbulent stratocumulus. The northwesterly winds behind the cold front shaped the stratocumulus but had no effect on the higher ice crystal cloud. There was wind shear evident and Kelvin-Helmholtz instability was clearly observed in some fragments of the low cloud. I watched in awe as the shapes and colours transformed by the minute.
I stop whatever I am doing to watch the sunset because nothing is as important as a few minutes of appreciating that the world does turn no matter what craziness is happening out there. I paint them... maybe for the same reason that Tom Thomson did.
There is almost no tooth to this smooth panel so I simply laid the oils in thick and heavy and left them.
I paint outside - nothing between my eyes and the inspiration. That special connectivity gets into the pigments and you quickly realize that we are all stewards of the land, privileged to appreciate its beauty during our lifetime but responsible for leaving the environment better off for the future and all inhabitants... Phil was born and raised along the St. Lawrence of Ontario, Canada and studied at Queens University as a nuclear physicist. A meteorologist for Environment Canada for 35 years, Phil specializes in severe weather and training. Remote sensing is his forte - you might want to see a tornado before you die... but not just before you die! He has farmed, raised bees, written books and articles, lectured and instructed...
