I was on what turned out to be a marathon paddle. It took quite a while to decide where the half way point of my paddle was. Half way is when you decide to turn back. It turned out to be a four hour paddle, longer than the trip around Gilligan's Island.
This painting is from 10:30 am on that Wednesday August 3rd, 2016. I was on my way back and was attracted to the vacant cottage on the west shore of the west basin of Red Horse Lake. This cottage is only accessible by boat. Roddick's Lane ends a half kilometre to the south. Roddick's Lane is a challenging piece of road even during the summer. The terrain around Red Horse Lake is exceedingly rough.
The sun was getting high in the sky and the low bands of cumulus were largely front lit. The quasi-stationary front was still sprawled west to east across southern Ontario and I suspect that these cloud bands were due to gravity waves with the southerly winds of the warm conveyor belt riding along and over the warm frontal...
I paint outside - nothing between my eyes and the inspiration. That special connectivity gets into the pigments and you quickly realize that we are all stewards of the land, privileged to appreciate its beauty during our lifetime but responsible for leaving the environment better off for the future and all inhabitants... Phil was born and raised along the St. Lawrence of Ontario, Canada and studied at Queens University as a nuclear physicist. A meteorologist for Environment Canada for 35 years, Phil specializes in severe weather and training. Remote sensing is his forte - you might want to see a tornado before you die... but not just before you die! He has farmed, raised bees, written books and articles, lectured and instructed...
