Description
I headed out to exactly the same spot for the afternoon light. I had wanted to paint the deep cobalt blue shadows of the afternoon sun but the cirrostratus of the approaching storm had become thick. Both the light and the shadows were dull. As a result, I decided to play with the "gray" or is it "grey". Apparently the "gray" variant appeared later, as an American English variant of "grey". Both have mostly the same meanings:
"grey" - relating to an achromatic color of any lightness between the extremes of black and white. Dull or dark: a gray, rainy afternoon.
Lacking in cheer; gloomy: a gray mood.
The word "grey" or "gray" fit the afternoon light perfectly. The title is a pit of a pun on the word "morning" which has almost the same letters and a similar sound to "morning". The title thus contains the entire day - both moraine and afternoon.
I have painted these hills and the distant thin forest several times. The crows were still cawing but I could now hear the constant roar of the bull dozers working on the farm south on the 12th Concession.
