Description
This was midday on Day One of the Paint the Town Kingston event of the Annual International Plein Air Painters (IPAP) Paint Out. This IPAP event was affiliated with the Kingston School of Art as it had been since 2015.
I decided to remain in the shade of the friendly willow tree. In 2015 this boat house was the subject of #1460 "Green Door B & B". This day I decided to only paint the white door. The changing water levels were recorded in the stained paint. The metal roof was rusted and probably starting to leak. The walls were rusty as well. The future did not look bright for the Green Door B & B.
The waves from passing boats and jet skis would refract around the corner of the building occasionally leaving those ringed ripples which I included in the painting.
A muskrat played in the shallows in front of me while I painted. A furtive mink also came by. The ladies painting near me called them all otters. It was a beautiful day even as Hurricane Dorian chewed up the east coast of North America.

The Kingston School of Art juror Michele La Rose for 2019 had to say about Phil Chadwick’s Barriefield White Door: “This little jewel has made an unassuming subject quite special indeed. Phil has taken the ordinary and made it extraordinary through effective cropping and a fine overall composition. It also feels like a pure abstraction to me, an important element in any style of art. It has a wonderful use of colour and pattern, a strong use of contrast in colour and value, and a lightness of touch that is commendable.”

It is always fascinating to see how you see a scene, Phil, and how you simplify it down to the basics. Nothing extra, every stroke necessary, each color perfect and accurate, and never overworked. Just colors and simple shapes. Thanks to you, I am learning to see plein air in a way that makes it easy to paint. I take off my glasses and see just the colors and simple shapes and then paint without thinking about the result. So much fun! And the result you achieved in this one is such a fabulous abstract and yet wonderfully real. Sort of like putting a puzzle together. This is amazing and beautiful...the reflections and everything...just brilliant. Thanks, Phil Chadwick! L/F
Phil Chadwick replied:
Oh my goodness Sunny. Thank you so much. Yes, I typically take off my reading glasses as well.. and I squint my eyes to eliminate unnecessary detail. The colours and the shapes tell the basic story leaving the rest to play out in the eyes and the mind of the viewer. And it was fun as well :>)
Phil Chadwick replied:
You can still "see" the padlock on the latch of the door and the rusty handle and the opening where the keyed lock used to be... these are just shapes and colours though and you try not to think of the things that your mind knows they are :>)
