Description
The sun was lowering in the west. I don't normally paint looking into the sun but the backlit cumulus and sun glint on the water interested me. The northwesterly streets of stratocumulus were still energetic enough and interesting in their shape as they tumbled along with the wind. A patch of cloud on the more northern horizon was much more layered in appearance and I wondered about the possibility of a trough in the weather pattern. Sure enough, that wave in the atmospheric flow showed up clearly in the satellite imagery and encouraged the development of a small comma cloud - something that I used to teach a lot about.
The cumulus cloud in the northwesterly flow behind Sunday's cold front was certainly a mixture of turbulent mixing and daytime heating. As the ridge of high pressure continued to build in and the air mass dried out, the cloud would also fade. Without daytime heating this cloud will transition to clear skies. I have seen it five hundred times before- make that five hundred and one.
I purposely left my glasses in the studio. One does not want or need to see or paint all of the details to capture the scene. I also wanted to warm up my palette a bit and shy away from the blues that had consumed my previous few palettes. It was time to move on.
